Car service vs rideshare in Chicago: the short answer
Book a car service when being late, stranded, or overcharged would cost you more than the ride. Use rideshare when the trip is short, flexible, and low stakes.
- Car service: airport trips, early mornings and late nights, groups of five or more, and business travel.
- Rideshare: midday rides across town, solo trips with no luggage, and trips where a few extra minutes do not matter.
Airport trips: car service usually wins
O'Hare has more takeoffs and landings than any other U.S. airport, and a busy airport makes rideshare pickups harder.
At O'Hare, Uber and Lyft pick up only on the upper level of Terminals 2 and 3. Since February 2023 they cannot pick up at Terminal 5, where nearly all international flights land. From there you take the free airport train to Terminal 2, then wait for a driver. When many flights land at once, prices jump and waits grow.
Black cars pick up on the lower level of every O'Hare terminal, Terminal 5 included. Your chauffeur tracks your flight and meets you at the arrivals door or the curb, your choice. A late flight does not change your price.
At Midway, black cars pick up in the lower-level center lane at Doors 1 and 2.

Chicago adds fees to Uber and Lyft rides
On top of the fare, the city adds surcharges to Uber and Lyft rides:
- $5 for rides to or from O'Hare, Midway, Navy Pier, and McCormick Place.
- $1.50 for solo rides in the larger downtown congestion zone and Hyde Park, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. (since January 2026).
With a car service, your price is confirmed before you ride.
